16.20 – tote Placepot Your First Bet EBF Novice Stakes – 7f
This is a poor event, and it would be very disappointing if the warm-favourite, THE ATTORNEY, couldn’t make good use of this excellent opportunity. His form has improved with each outing this year and his latest third in a better race is the strongest form on offer. James Doyle takes the ride and his mount should have little trouble getting off the mark.
Selections: THE ATTORNEY
16.55 – Irish EBF Future Stayers Novice Stakes – 1m
Andrew Balding’s horses are running very well of late and MELODY OF LIFE should be able to build on his promising third at Kempton. The form of that contest should work out nicely in due course and, with that all important experience under his belt, he’s got excellent claims.
Ralph Beckett’s team, coincidentally, are in good form at present, therefore, SERENA’S QUEEN has a good chance. She ran very well to finish fourth on debut despite showing greenness and with better to come, she has to be considered.
Selections: MELODY OF LIFE, SERENA’S QUEEN
17.30 – Galleywood Nursery – 1m2f
Another low-grade race on this evening’s card, so I’m going to have three on our ticket.
BABY SHAM is probably the most consistent out of the whole bunch and she’s run very well on both visits to this track. She’s been dropped 2Ib in the handicap for her latest fifth over one-mile and should be suited to the extra emphasis on stamina.
EYES is quirky, but she’s another one to have run well on both visits to the course and her third here two starts ago looks good form for this grade. The return to the longer trip should prompt improvement as she’s likely to be finishing to good effect as is often the case.
Mark Johnston and Joe Fanning are always to be feared in these sorts of races and LADYWOOD should be able to build on her fast-finishing fourth at Wolverhampton whilst on an attractive-looking mark.
Selections: BABY SHAM, EYES, LADYWOOD
18.00 – British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes – 1m2f
Mark Johnston’s KONDO ISAMI sets the standard based on his two promising efforts in defeat at Newcastle recently. He’s up against some promising types and could be vulnerable for win purposes, but he’s more than capable of reaching the frame and looks fair value.
Coincidentally, Charlie Appleby runs two in the race with marginal preference for TAMBORRADA, who’s well-bred and, in the expectation James Doyle would have had first choice, this debutant has to be feared.
Selections: KONDO ISAMI, TAMBORRADA
18.30 – New Handicap – 1m2f
An interesting race with most of these having some sort of chance. Mark Johnston’s THE TRADER has plenty of useful form and has more than held his form well at a similar level previously. He hardly runs a bad race and is sure to be thereabouts.
Tom Dascombe’s SHA LA LA LA LEE has plenty of early dash and although this race probably demands more than his latest second, he’s very well treated based on previous AW exploits and looks the sort of horse to win this event.
Selections: THE TRADER, SHA LA LA LA LEE
19.00 – Weatherbys & Birdie 2021 Calendars Handicap – 1m6f
Those towards the top of the handicap look the ones to side with. Firstly, Mark Johnston’s KING’S ADVICE, who is tough as old boots and has often kept stronger company than this. His current mark looks more than within range having contested better races off stiffer marks previously and he’s likely to make a bold bid if given a soft lead.
Whilst RED VERDON has the assistance of Ryan Moore and is another to consider dropping down in grade. He’s had his fair share of reward over the years and, with his proven back-class against high-class opposition, the seven-year-old could run a big race.
Selections: KING’S ADVICE, RED VERDON
