It’s been more than four months since Jon Jones relinquished his light-heavyweight title to move up in weight. Unfortunately, news on his first fight at heavyweight has yet to surface. UFC President Dana White spoke to the media and offered more information about Jon Jones fighting at heavyweight.
Jones is without a doubt one of the biggest stars in MMA. Just about everyone is excited to see him make the move to heavyweight. Today, we’ll discuss some of the possible matchups Jon Jones could find himself in next year.
Miocic vs. Ngannou 2 Has Yet to be Formally Announced
The UFC heavyweight division seems to be on repeat lately. Over the past couple of years, the only title fights that have taken place in the division were between Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier. In the end, Miocic won the trilogy and is now considered the greatest heavyweight alive.
Frustration is reaching a tipping point for Francis Ngannou. The Cameroonian knockout artist has won four-straight wins in the first round. He’s the clear number-one contender to fight for Stipe’s belt, yet the UFC has delayed announcing this matchup. Miocic even claims it’s a fight he’s not particularly interested in.
Reports surfaced recently that this fight will be taking place sometime in March. It’s a rematch from a fight that took place back in January of 2018. That night, Stipe Miocic beat Francis Ngannou over five rounds to defend his heavyweight title.
BetOnline, one of the top internet sportsbooks in the US, lists Ngannou as the -180 favorite in this matchup. He’s looked incredible lately and seems ready to earn his first world title. Stipe Miocic is a legend in the fight game, yet he comes into this fight as the +155 underdog.
Jon Jones is waiting patiently to see how things unfold in this division. He’s the sport’s pound-for-pound king and has the skills to become a champion at heavyweight. Everyone is curious to see how he looks at this new weight.
It seems that we’re not too far away from seeing Jon fight again. Here’s what we know about this situation!
Here’s an Update on Jon Jones Fighting at Heavyweight!
Jon Jones became the youngest UFC champion in history back in 2011. Over the next nine years, he had arguably the greatest runs in the history of MMA. Jones has yet to really lose in the case (aside from a controversial DQ) and holds wins over some of the greatest fighters to ever compete.
Many were shocked to hear that Jones was giving up his light-heavyweight title in order to move up in weight. He seemed to love being the champion. His mind is made up, though, and he now seems focused on becoming the best fighter at heavyweight.
As we mentioned earlier, there’s a lot happening in the heavyweight division. There has been very little news on when Jones will compete again. This week, however, he spoke with UFC President Dana White about his plans for the future. White revealed the conversation went well during a recent media interview.
“He’s excited to come back,” White said. “He’s excited to fight again. This is one of those sports you have to be 100 percent in, in every way you could be in, to want to do this. I think he’s there. I think that’s where he is now. … The guy is literally undefeated and has beaten the who’s who. Now he’s going to move up to heavyweight. If he continues to win fights at heavyweight, it’s hard to deny Jon Jones.”
The main criticism towards Jon Jones lately has been a lack of motivation. Some felt that he wasn’t putting in the same amount of work that he did early on in his career. That could have led to the several close decisions in his most recent bouts.
Dana White seems to feel that Jones is truly motivated to break into the heavyweight division. He’ll have a number of world-class opponents waiting for him. Now, some of the best online sportsbooks are offering odds on his possible next opponents.
