FanDuel Group on Monday announced an exclusive deal with Hall of Fame Basketballer and Sports Emmy Award-winning analyst Charles Barkley. The deal that comes ahead of the upcoming NBA season will see Barkley as the New York-based company’s spokesperson and brand ambassador. Barkley will also participate in FanDuel’s social media channels, besides making guest appearances on the Group’s affiliated podcasts as part of the agreement.
The Leeds-based Basketball player was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996 and is currently an analyst for “Inside the NBA” and “The NBA on TNT” for Turner Sports. The partnership comes months after FanDuel forged an agreement with Turner Sports to serve as its exclusive sports betting provider.
While sharing his sentiments on the latest deal, Barkley said he previously enjoyed working with FanDuel during last season’s playoffs, adding that he’s “grateful to now be their brand ambassador.” In a joint statement, the 11-time NBA All-Star said FanDuel helps the show be more informative and interactive in a way that any knucklehead could comprehend. “So even if your side is down by 20 in the fourth quarter, with FanDuel you’ll have a reason to continue watching.”
Barkley, A Perfect Fit for the Deal!
Charles Barkley has been affiliated with Turner Sports for more than two decades, according to Will Funk, Turner Sports’ executive vice president for sports partnerships and branded content, Turner Sports. Funk praised how the former player brought his unique flair, personality and predictions to their ‘NBA on TNT’ telecasts, adding “We look forward to featuring him in engaging FanDuel Group’s brand integrations on Turner Sports’ and Bleacher Report’s NBA programming.”
While commenting on the development, FanDuel’s Chief Marketing Officer Mike Raffensperger, said that Charles Barkley is a national sports icon and a television legend, so he’s the perfect individual to ring in the holidays for the customers. Raffensperger added that for the next few years, FanDuel looks forward to amplifying Charles Barkley’s voice and adding his unique personality to make sports betting fun for everyone.
Ties With Athletes Deepening
The latest deal reflects the deepening of the ties between the sports betting entities with the NBA. Though Sir Charles is not the first former player to sign a market deal with a sports betting company, he is indeed the highest-profile former athlete to ink a promotional deal with a company. The Olympic gold medalist has long been considered a cheerful character, best known for his straightforward remarks about any topic, including the game. He’s also fond of hanging around a blackjack table for fun gambling.
As part of the deal, FanDuel reveals various promotional offers as the pro basketball leagues start their upcoming season on Tuesday. Customers will get a risk-free bet or site credit for use on Tuesday or Wednesday, and players can also score free entry in NBA contests through Christmas. If that’s not enough, several opening nights and Christmas games will also feature odds boosts for specific wagers.
FanDuel to Honor Number 34
In addition, the sports betting and daily fantasy sports company announced something special in honor of the basketball legend playing number 34. The group will donate 340,000 meals to the country’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization, Feeding America. This network of food banks serves every community in the US.
Barkley is the fifth individual to sign an exclusive content arrangement with the Group, joining Cousin Sal, JJ Zachariason, Worldwide Wob, and former Indianapolis Colts Punter Pat McAfee.
