Fields Stays On Top

Ohio State’s Justin Fields is the sole Heisman favorite at DraftKings (+125) after turning in another remarkable performance in his third game of the season. Fields threw five touchdown passes and ran for another score to help Ohio State beat Rutgers 49-27 in Week 10.

Considering the Big 10 conference plays fewer games than the SEC and ACC this season, we knew Fields would have to be near-perfect to have a shot at winning. He’s somehow managed to exceed those expectations in the early goings.

Fields has thrown for 908 yards and 11 touchdowns with no interceptions while completing 86.7% of his passes through three games. The former Georgia transfer put in some major work this offseason, and we’re already seeing it come to fruition on the field.

Trask Makes Massive Leap

Florida’s Kyle Trask was the biggest mover in the Heisman odds following Week 10. The Gators QB saw his odds go from +3167 (average) to +600 at DraftKings after helping his Gators defeat Georgia for the first time in four years. Trask went 30-of-43 for a career-high 474 yards and four touchdowns in a 44-28 victory.

Trask has now thrown four touchdown passes in five straight games, making him the first QB in SEC history to accomplish the feat. What’s even more impressive is he got it done on Saturday without star TE Kyle Pitts, who had to exit the game in the second quarter after a monstrous hit from UGA’s Lewis Cine.

This isn’t the first time Trask has been a top-five Heisman favorite. He was actually co-favored (+400) for the trophy after Week 5 but later saw his odds fall off once Florida suffered an upset loss to Texas A&M. A signature win against Georgia and a chance to face Alabama in the SEC title game puts him right back in the conversation.

Jones, Lawrence Both Idle

Fields was the only Heisman favorite active this weekend, as both Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and Alabama’s Mac Jones were out of action. Jones’ Crimson Tide had a bye week, while Lawrence was unavailable to play in his team’s big game against Notre Dame after testing positive for COVID-19 last week.

Clemson suffered a 47-40 overtime loss to the Irish, but what’s interesting is how sportsbooks reacted. Lawrence’s Heisman odds were lengthened at DraftKings, but they’ve actually gotten shorter at FanDuel. You have to think that the Tigers losing their first regular-season game since 2017 shows just how important Lawrence is to the team.

While Clemson has a bye in Week 11, Alabama’s Jones will be back in action against a 2-3 LSU team that is nothing like the squad that upset the Tide last season. Jones is currently on track for a clash with Florida’s Trask in an SEC title game that could have big Heisman implications.

Does BYU’s Wilson Present Value?

One player that is flying under the radar in the Heisman race compared to his competitors is BYU’s, Zach Wilson. The junior Cougars pivot has thrown a nation-leading 2,511 passing yards for 21 touchdowns and just two interceptions through eight games.

Wilson’s Heisman odds are the best they’ve been this season after he impressed on the national stage in his biggest test of the season at Boise State. Wilson went 21-of-27 for 359 yards and two touchdowns to help the Cougars remain unbeaten with a huge 51-17 victory over the Broncos.

Wilson at FanDuel (+4000) is an intriguing value play, but the reality is BYU won’t face another tough opponent until bowl season. He’s doing wonders for his draft stock right now, but you have to remember the Heisman places great value on strength of schedule.

Heisman Analysis After Week 10

This is shaping up to be a very tight Heisman race with five quarterbacks all making strong cases as to why they deserve an invite to New York. Fields has been so good through three games that you can’t go wrong betting him at plus-money. His current stat line of 13 TDs and only 11 incompletions is being eaten up by media members and potential voters.

Wilson is a great story, but he’s at a major disadvantage due to the school he plays for. Not only does Alabama’s Jones have similar stats, but he actually has a better completion percentage (78.5%) than Wilson and is doing it against much better competition. Wilson isn’t on the national stage enough to steal those votes away.

Trask is a solid longshot play, while Lawrence could be a great comeback story if Clemson gets another chance at Notre Dame in the ACC title game. Jones could also see an odds boost as Alabama goes for revenge over LSU next weekend. These are all great storylines, but as long as Fields keeps up this elite level of play, it’s simply not going to matter.
