Jared Goff Out of Rams’ Week 17 Game After Undergoing Thumb Surgery

  • Jared Goff is unlikely to play in the Rams’ season finale against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
  • Goff underwent thumb surgery on Tuesday and isn’t expected to return until at least the playoffs, if they make it.
  • The Rams are currently -1.5 point betting favorites to beat the Cardinals.

The big game in Week 17 of the NFL’s 2020 season is the NFC west showdown between the Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals at SoFi Stadium with both teams still battling for an NFC wild card spot.

Life would have been more easier for both had they taken care of business in Week 16 but the Rams lost to the Seahawks and the Cardinals were defeated by the 49ers last weekend to set up this all-important NFC west matchup:

Unlikely to Play on Sunday

The big story for the Rams is quarterback Jared Goff who will miss the season finale after undergoing thumb surgery on Monday. Goff dislocated his thumb after hitting it on the helmet of Seahawks defender Benson Mayowa in the second half of the game. The Rams’ medical staff popped the the thumb back in place and Goff continued playing the game.

Although the Rams have yet to officially rule out Goff for Sunday’s game against the Cardinals, he isn’t expected to play after undergoing a surgical procedure. Instead, the Rams are reportedly hoping that he is ready in time for the playoffs. That is if they make it.

The Rams will make the playoffs automatically if they beat the Cardinals. However, they will have to do it with the undrafted John Wolford starting behind center. Wolford has never played a single NFL regular season game. If the Rams lose to the Cardinals, they still have a chance to make the playoffs, if the Chicago Bears lose to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

Rams Are Still Slight Favorites

Los Angeles defeated Arizona 38-28 during their first meeting of the season in Week 13. Goff had a big game that day as he completed 37 of 47 passes for 351 yards with one touchdown and no interception. Cam Akers rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown but like Goff, he isn’t expected to play here too after missing Week 16 with an ankle injury.

The Rams have won eight out of their last 10 head to head meetings against Arizona, covering the spread in seven of those games. However, Los Angeles is just 4-10 SU at home when hosting Arizona and the Cardinals have won two out of three games against backup quarterbacks. Without Goff and Akers on Sunday, this all-important game will become much more interesting, and the oddsmakers agree.

The Rams opened this game as 5-point favorites but with the news that Goff had underwent thumb surgery and will not play on Sunday, the spread has narrowed to -1.5 points with Los Angeles still the slight favorites. They are also currently listed as a -160 odds on favorite at Bet365’s moneyline as of December 29th.

Murray Could be out Too

Sunday’s game could have another twist because as of this writing, Cardinals’ QB Kyler Murray’s status for the game is uncertain. Murray got “leg-whipped” right after he threw an incomplete pass with 14 seconds left on 4th and 7. The Cardinals lost to the 49ers, putting them in this precarious situation.

However, Murray’s injury isn’t considered serious after evaluation revealed that there is no structural damage so there is a chance that he can play against the Rams. The second year quarterback is having a fantastic season for Arizona. The no. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft has thrown for 3,884 yards with 26 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while also adding 816 rushings yards and 11 rushing touchdowns.

After losing to the 49ers, the Cardinals’ playoff hopes are no longer in their hands. Not only do they have to beat the Rams on Sunday, they will also need the Chicago Bears to lose to the Packers on the same play date. If Chicago wins, the Bears and the winner of the Rams vs Cardinals will go to the playoff with them. If Chicago loses, then it will be Los Angeles and Arizona going to the playoffs.
