When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. In this case, when a pandemic empties your arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, you make it into “Bubbleville, Connecticut!”
Mohegan Sun Arena To the Rescue
The 10,000-seat Mohegan Sun Arena, home to the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun and NLL’s New England Black Wolves, is next up. The large space and campus of Mohegan Sun, the 5th largest Casino Resort in the western hemisphere, is perfect. “It’s a single site, secluded location, with enormous square footage for social distancing,“ said Greg Procino, VP of basketball operations for the Basketball Hall of Fame, “There are a lot of things that will work in our favor. ”
“It’s an enormous undertaking…and it’s changing every day, but we have a lot of firm pieces. We expect 35-plus teams to play about 40 games. Some teams are playing four games, some teams are playing one game. It’s a mixed bag.”

Highest Priority is Health
Hartford Health will manage the testing. Each team, personnel, and a pool of 25 referees will be tested upon arrival. Different schools and conferences have different protocols and policies, but only PCR nasal swab testing will be used at Mohegan Sun, where its health department does not accept other methods.
The Mohegan Sun has already developed protocols for coronavirus testing, cleaning, and managing sports during the pandemic. It also has its own medical staff and facilities to treat and isolate anyone who may be infected.
The Mohegan Sun put Protocols in place when the resort teamed with Viacom over the summer to produce televised boxing matches and mixed martial arts events. The casino had already installed safety devices as part of its reopening in June, including ultraviolet lighting and special filters in its HVAC system.

Each school will have its own secured floor in the resort’s 34-story tower hotels along with meeting and catered dining areas. A practice facility, with courts on which some games also will be played, will take shape in the resort’s 125,000-square-foot exposition center. The teams will move around through designated “back of the house” corridors, so they don’t interact with the public.
Mohegan Sun is setting up the Skyboxes for media, and postgame news conferences will be done by teleconference.
