Poker pros win sportsbetting contest

It is always fun to check in on what poker professionals do next when they are unable to play poker. With the games drying up in the US, Mark Gregorich and David Baker turned their attention to sportsbetting.

We have already seen poker players find success in Daily Fantasy Sports and these two poker players had big results in two sportsbetting contests that covered last year’s NFL season.

These contests are similar to poker tournaments, you pay an entry fee and you bet against the spread in five games each week. Betting against the spread means not just picking the winning team, they have to win by a margin larger than the spread. So a +7 point spread means your team has to win by more than 7 points.

Gregorich and two-time bracelet winner Baker teamed up in two contests. They came second in the $1,000 Circa Sports Millions for $200,000 and came first in the $1,500 Westgate SuperContest for $435,623, for a combined win of $785,623 between them. They could have banked an extra $800,000 from the Circa Sports Millions were it not for a late pass touch down for San Franciso at the end of the season.

It was perhaps the most unusual of NFL seasons to bet on because of the ongoing COVID crisis. There wasn’t the normal pre season warm-up and games would be disrupted, meaning the players were rusty compared to previous seasons.

Baker told PocketFives he plans to use his winnings to move to Las Vegas for what he hopes will be a normal World Series of Poker this year.
